Proverbs



This post is about proverbs: I like to discover the wisdon they treasure and the way people used to thinkis amazing!


I am a great fan of saying and idioms, too but and this time I will focus on some Norwegian proverbs.

I started to learn this language some months ago and I found proverbs useful to practise and to find out new vocabulary structures and forms.

1. Ut på tur, aldri sur! ”Out on a trip, never sulky!”

2. Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær.. ”There is no bad weather, only bad clothing.”

3. Når katten er borte, danser musene på bordet. ”When the cat is gone, the mice dance on the table.”

4. Jo flere kokker, jo mer søl. ”The more cooks, the more mess.”

5. Bare bok gjør ingen klok. ”Only book makes nobody wise.”

6. Ingen fisk uten bein. ”No fish without bones.”

7. Gammel vane, vond å vende. ”Old habit, hard to turn.”

8. Den som vil være med på leken, må smake steken. ”The one who wants to join the game, has to taste the steak.”

9. Bunden hund bykser ikkje lenger enn bandet rekk. A tied dog does not jump farther than his cord.

10. A tied up man is sorrowful. Bunden mann er sorgbunden.

11. All madmen are not the same. - Alle galningar er ikkje like.

12. Another's horse is always strong. - Annan manns hest er alltid sterk.

13. Away is not to be at home. - Borte er ikkje å vere heime.

14. Better little than nothing. - Betre lite enn ingenting.

15. Boatless man is tied to the land. - Båtlaus mann er bunden til land.

16. Bookless man is (quite) blind. Boklaus mann er blind .

17. Children do children's work. Barn gjer barns verk.

18. Even the best swimmer may sink. Beste svømmaren kan òg søkke.

19. Everyone wants to live long, but nobody wants to age (get old). Alle vil leve lenge, men ingen vil eldast (bli gammal).

20. Everything needs its time. Alle ting treng si tid.

21. From children and drunk people we get to hear the truth. Av barn og fulle folk får ein høyre sanninga.

22. From our years we learn more than from many books. [Av år lærer ein meir enn av mange bøker.

23. From small seeds big trees grow. Av små frø blir det store tre.

24. Most prayers go unanswered anyway. Bønner flest går trass alt utan svar.

25. Not everyone can become pope in Rome. Alle kan ikkje bli pave i Roma.

26. Other times, other customs (manners). Andre tider har andre sedar.

27. The best friends are fewest. Dei beste vennane er det færrast av .

28. The friend of all is the fool of all. Allemanns venn er allemanns narr.

29. The burnt child fears the fire. Brent barn er redd elden.

30. Too near is little dear. Altfor nært er lite kjært.
